A fire pump churn test (also called a no-flow test) is conducted to verify that a fire pump system is functioning properly under zero-flow conditions. The key purposes of a churn test include:

  1. Checking Pump Operation: The test confirms that the fire pump starts automatically when needed and is running smoothly, even when no water is being discharged.

  2. Ensuring Pressure Stability: It measures the pressure generated by the pump when no water is flowing through the system, ensuring that it maintains the designed churn pressure without any issues like leaks or malfunctioning components.

  3. Testing Mechanical and Electrical Components: The test helps identify any mechanical or electrical problems with the pump, such as vibrations, overheating, or unusual noises, that might not appear during regular operation.

  4. Monitoring System Parameters: It provides an opportunity to check system parameters, such as electrical consumption, pump speed, and general system health, to ensure the system is ready for emergency conditions.

Fire pump churn tests are part of the NFPA 25 standard for inspection, testing, and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems, and they help ensure that the fire pump will work properly during an actual emergency.
