Seven Selection Methods for Fire Pumps

Fire pumps are an essential part of many water-based fire protection systems. They are used to increase the pressure (measured in psi and bar) of a water source when that source is not adequate for the system it’s supplying. These are commonly found in buildings that tend to have a high-pressure demand such as high-rises or storage warehouses. But how to buy a good quality fire pump? The following are seven suggestions:
1. The centrifugal pump with high efficiency, low noise and energy saving should be selected, and it is strictly forbidden to choose outdated products.
2. The pump should be selected according to the design flow and the required lift, and considering the drop of the pump output due to the wear and tear of the pump, the slurry pump can be selected according to the calculated lift H multiplied by the coefficient of 1.05~1.10; the characteristic curve should be selected as follows. The pump whose flow increases and its lift gradually decreases, such a pump works stably and is reliable when working in parallel; and the operating point of the pump should be kept in the high-efficiency range, which saves energy and is not easy to damage the parts.
3. When there is no adjustment facility in the water supply network, it is advisable to use a speed-regulating pump group or a rated speed pump group to run the water supply. The maximum water output of the pump set should not be less than the design flow of the residential water supply, and should be checked against fire protection conditions.
4. The number of pumps should be minimized when selecting lift pumps for water tanks and water towers. One should be used and one should be prepared. When a single pump can meet the requirements, it is not appropriate to use multiple parallel pumps; if it is necessary to use multiple parallel operation or matching of large and small pumps When the pump is running in parallel, the model and number of centrifugal pumps should not be too many, and the models should not exceed two.
5. The design water supply flow rate of the variable frequency speed regulating pump should ensure that it meets the requirements of the maximum design second flow rate in the domestic water supply system. The power supply of the slurry pump must be reliable; the working point of the pump should be selected in the high-efficiency working area of the pump characteristic curve, and should not be selected on the extension line of the Q-H curve. The point, that is, the point where the water output of the pump is the largest and the lift is lower but can meet the requirements, that is, the intersection of the low point of the high-efficiency area of the pump characteristic curve and the pipeline characteristic curve. The working range of the speed regulation of the pump can be within the high-efficiency section of the pump as much as possible; the speed regulation range should be set between 25% and 100% of the water supply of the pump; the equipment should have the function of automatic water level control.
6. The multi-stage pump unit of the domestic pressurized water supply system should be equipped with a standby pump. The water supply capacity of the standby pump should be greater than that of the largest running water pump. The water pump should be automatically switched and operated alternately.
7. The voltage of the motor equipped with the centrifugal pump should be the same, and the power supply system should be the same as that of the State Grid.
