Do Fire Pumps Require Seasonal Maintenance?

Here are some key maintenance tasks based on different seasons:

Spring/Summer Maintenance:

  • Inspect for Corrosion: Warmer weather can cause humidity, which may lead to rust and corrosion on the pump components.
  • Cooling System Check: Ensure that cooling systems, especially for diesel engines, are functioning properly to prevent overheating.
  • Electrical Components: High temperatures may cause electrical components to degrade faster, so check connections and wiring.

Fall/Winter Maintenance:

  • Cold Weather Protection: In colder climates, check for proper insulation or heating of the pump room to prevent freezing, especially for water pipes and diesel fuel.
  • Lubrication: Cold weather can cause lubricants to thicken, so ensure all moving parts are adequately lubricated.
  • Battery Check (Diesel Engines): Cold weather affects battery efficiency, so ensure the battery is fully charged and in good condition.

General Year-Round Maintenance:

  • Test Runs: Regular test runs ensure that the pump activates properly in case of an emergency.
  • Alignment and Balancing: Check the alignment of the pump and motor shafts to avoid wear.
  • Pressure and Flow Testing: Check that the pump meets the required pressure and flow standards according to NFPA20.

Regular seasonal maintenance helps prolong the life of the fire pumps and ensures compliance with safety standards.
